PLANS for a multi-million pound Sainsbury’s store in Ambleside have been re-drawn following public feedback this summer.

The new-look version - released this week - goes on public display in the town this Saturday.

Sainsbury’s, which has been wanting to move into South Cumbria for three years, says it has redesigned its plans and urged the public to attend the event.

In July this year, the company held exhibitions showing what the store - on land south of Hayes Garden World - might look like.

The company said Sainsbury’s has made ‘some improvements’.

These include moving the building back from being immediately next to Lake Road, improving the detailed exterior design and reducing the height of the roof.

Before a planning application is submitted to the Lake District National Park Authority, an exhibition of the new plans will be held at Ambleside Parish Centre on Saturday December 7 between 9:30am-2:30pm.

Andrew Sanderson, Sainsbury’s regional development manager, said: “Our first consultation was met positively and we received lots of great feedback from the local community. However, it became apparent that there were a couple of issues that we needed to consider further.

“We’ve taken onboard these comments and look forward to displaying the updated proposals at Ambleside Parish Centre on Saturday the 7th of December. I would encourage anyone with an interest in this exciting scheme to come along and take a look at the improvements we’ve made.”

Sainsbury’s plans include a 14,000 sq ft foodstore, with 142 dedicated car parking spaces. It says the development would also create up to 100 new full and part-time jobs.

The store hopes it would be a 'trolley shop' destination so residents did not have to make journeys to Windermere and Kendal.
