AN ICONIC Ulverston-born comedian is to be brought to life on the small screen as the BBC makes a new film about comedy legends Laurel and Hardy.
The 90-minute one-off comedy drama, Stan and Ollie, will chronicle the pair's 1953 tour of Britain, when their careers were on the wane and beset with problems.
Arthur Stanley Jefferson, famously known as Laurel, was born in Ulverston in 1890 and lived on a small terrace called Foundry Cottages, now Argyll Street.
After various roles, including being understudy to Charlie Chaplin, he met Hardy in 1920.
Mark Greenhow, who runs the Laurel and Hardy museum in Ulverston, said it was ‘fantastic news’ and shows that the duo still remained relevant today.
