PLANS for a Sainsbury’s store in Ambleside have been re-drawn following feedback this summer.

The new-look scheme went on display in the town’s Parish Centre on Saturday.

In July, the company held exhibitions showing what the store – on land south of Hayes Garden World – might look like.

The company said it had made ‘some improvements’ to the original design based on comments from the public.

These include moving the building back from being immediately next to Lake Road, improving the detailed exterior design and reducing the height of the roof.

Andrew Sanderson, Sainsbury’s regional development manager, said: “Our first consultation was met positively and we received lots of great feedback from the local community.

“However, it became apparent there were a couple of issues that we needed to consider further.

“I’d like to thank everyone who came to the Parish Centre on Saturday to view our updated plans.

“We had a really great turnout and the feedback we’ve received so far has been encouraging – the changes we made were largely welcomed by those who attended.”

Sainsbury’s plans include a 14,000ft2 foodstore, with 142 car parking spaces. It says the development would also create up to 100 new full and part-time jobs.

Ambleside resident John Smith, who viewed the new plans, said: “I think it’s vastly better than the previous one – I’m amazed that such small changes can make a difference.

“I’m reluctant for anything big to come to Ambleside because you don’t think of it as having big stores – but if it is going to happen then this is OK.”

Helen and Laurie Caro, who own a holiday home in the area, said they thought the store would be ‘an asset to Ambleside’.

The plans will now be submitted to the Lake District National Park Authority.
