Police are warning local communities to be vigilant when inviting strangers into their homes.

The public should only let those they know and trust into their properties following a number of suspicious incidents reported in the South Cumbria area, said Cumbria Police.

Detective Inspector Amanda Sadler said: “Following reports of strangers being found in people’s homes we are urging everybody, especially elderly people, to seek identification of any caller to their door and to not invite people into their home without good reason.

“We also want communities to look out for each other and to report any suspicious activity to Police.”

Police are currently investigating a number of incidents where a man has been found in a victim’s home without invitation.

Descriptions of the men have been of a small build, with grey/black hair wearing casual clothing and being of a tidy appearance.

On each reported occasion, the offender has made off following them being discovered.

Anyone with information or who notices any suspicious activity is asked to contact Cumbria Police on 101 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
