TWO thousand pounds of fixed penalty notices were issued in a multi-agency crackdown on overloaded vans and lorries.
Officers from Cumbria Police, Trading Standards and the government road safety department, the Driving Standards Agency, carried out the operation on the M6 at Todhills near to Carlisle on the afternoon of Friday December 13.
Police said they were targeting medium-sized goods vehicles and overloaded vehicles - because of the danger they can cause when carrying more than their limits.
The roadsice checks were also designed to check that drivers are not transporting counterfeit goods.
One HGV was found to have defective brakes on its trailer and over 30-plus vehicles were over their weight limit.
Police said drivers should not assume that because a load fits into a van it is fit to drive because the 'payload' of a vehicle is often very small and  overloaded vehicles can seriously affect braking distances.
