THE Ulverston Rotary Club have set up camp near a local supermarket to urge people to donate 'anything’ they can towards the Philippines Disaster Fund.

David Friend, who is part of the group, had visited the country 20 years ago and wanted to help immediately after seeing how Typhoon Haiyan had devastated the southeast Asian country in late November, killing more than 6,000.

Booth’s supermarket has let the group use a unit opposite the store on Canal Street to run their operation from.

The club are working with a transport company who will deliver container directly to the areas affected.

In the Philippines they are liaising with rotary colleagues and Philipino members of the Cumbria Multicultural Women's Network will be assisting with sorting the clothes to ensure that the most relevant clothing is chosen and delivered.

Coun Norman Bishop-Rowe said: “It is not just a clothing bank, we want people to come and donate anything they can.

“As well as the items collected going to the Philippines Disaster Fund, we will also be donating to local charities to help people throughout the area.”

The unit is open Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 4pm. During the holiday period these times and days may vary.
