THE generosity of people in Eden is being praised after £800 was raised in one evening.

The sum for Eden Carers was raised at a carol concert held by John Thompson, chair of Eden District Council.

St Andrews Church in Penrith was packed for the concert on December 16.

It featured performances from Penrith Town Band, choirs from Ullswater Community College, Lazonby and Beaconside Primary schools.

Council Chairman Mr Thompson said: “I am absolutely thrilled that so many people attended the concert and I would like to thank them for giving so generously to such a worthwhile cause.

"Eden Carers are my chosen charity because the work they do supporting volunteer carers of all ages in our communities is truly inspirational.

"The £800 raised as the concert will help sustain this valuable work.

“I would like to thank the local school choirs and Penrith Town Band who performed majestically at the concert and to The High Sheriff of Cumbria Mrs Diana Matthews JP, Cilla Clarke, the Chief Executive of Eden Carers, The Bishop of Penrith, The Rt Revd Robert Freeman for participating in the service, the church organist Alan Marston and Sainsbury’s and Greggs for helping to provide refreshments.

Cilla Clarke, chief executive of Eden Carers, said: “There are over 6,000 people in Eden who are caring for a loved one or friend and to know that the community has come together to remember them at this time was truly appreciated.

"Carers of all ages will not get a ‘day off’ this Christmas as most of us do and they do not seek any reward but knowing that the community recognises that immeasurable contribution they make will make a real difference.”
