UPDATE: Roads closed due to flooding as another storm approaches

ROADS across the county are closed after heavy rain was dumped on Cumbria today.

Cumbria Police have advised all motorists to allow extra time for their journey’s due to the amount of standing water on the roads.

The Met Office have issued the warning - valid from 12pm to 6pm.

A spokesperson said: "Strong southerly winds are expected to veer westerly this afternoon and increase further, with gales likely inland and severe gales possible across exposed coasts and hills."

The following roads are closed:

• Market Place, Whitehaven, flooded houses, roads closed- Swingpump Lane re-open
• School Brow, Moresby Parks, Whitehaven.
• Coach Road, Whitehaven.
• King Street / Irish Street, Whitehaven.
• Elbra Farm Close, Maryport.
• A5086 Lamplugh junction at Asby, Highways closing

And these roads are only passable with care:

• A591 Thirlmere, Nr Keswick
• Road between Great Broughton and Broughton Moor
• Road between A595 and Low Moresby
• Trumpet Road, Cleator
• Road between St Bees and Egremont
• B5345 St Bees
• A5093 Silecroft, Nr Millom
• Flood Warning for Keswick Camp site, which has closed.

Meanwhile, Electricity North West yesterday (Sunday) promised to restore power to around 70 properties across the county.

At its peak on Friday, more than 24,000 were without power and engineers have worked around the clock to repair the damage.

The restoration process was hindered as the high winds continued, meaning it was too dangerous for engineers to climb the poles.

A spokesperson said: "We understand how frustrating it is to be without power, especially during the festive period, but we would like to thank customers in Cumbria for their patience and support."
