A MAN is fighting for his life after being stabbed at a New Year's party.

Police were called to an address on Raffles Avenue, Carlisle just after 4pm on New Year's Day

A 23-year-old local man was treated at the scene for his injuries before being taken to Cumberland infirmary Carlisle where he was operated on.

Due to his life threatening injuries he was transferred to the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, for further surgery and his condition is described as critical.

Eight local men, aged between 23 and 59, have been arrested and remain in custody.

Detective Superintendent Mike Forrester, who is leading the investigation, said:

“The incident happened during a party to celebrate the New Year.

"This is an extremely difficult investigation due to the number of people involved and due to the lack of information forthcoming.

"A man is fighting for his life and I would urge anyone with information to come forward and speak to us in confidence.”

Anyone wishing to speak to the investigation team can ring Cumbria Police on 101 and ask for the Carlisle incident room.
