A PROJECT devoted to finding out what makes Cumbria special will launch next week at The Wave in Maryport.

People will be invited to drop by and talk to the project team about their feelings about the county and their stories of life here.

These accounts will go towards an online profile of Cumbria, which can be shared by all who love the county.

The Maryport launch event on January 16 will kick-start a county-wide roadshow, and all events will allow people to ask questions, suggest aspects of life in Cumbria that should be highlighted and find out more about a new website which will support the project.

The project’s leader, Mary Ferguson, who is based at Tullie House in Carlisle, says: “We really want to assess what makes this county somewhere to take to our hearts and get to the bottom of why so many people cherish it.

“We need people’s contributions.  It might be a place, a story, a song or a recipe. It might be a personal memory or something of national or international significance.

“Everyone can play a part creating a picture of Cumbria as we know it today and of the Cumbria that we have known and loved in the past.”
