GALLOWBARROW’S Florence Hudson celebrates her 100th birthday tomorrow (Friday) with an ‘open house’ party for family and friends.

Bradford-born Mrs Hudson moved to Kendal in 2003 to be nearer her only daughter, Margaret Belk. Before that she lived in Heysham with her husband Jack, who died in 2001.

Her early years were spent in Bradford where she remembers the original Mrs Morrison of Morrisons supermarket fame, in the days before her father took on a sweets and ice cream shop at Saltaire. She would catch the train from there to dances at Morecambe – less than three shillings return!

During the war Mrs Hudson worked as a Land Army girl and was proud to receive her Land Army Medal from Sir James Cropper in 2008.

She married Jack at Bradford Cathedral after the war and, after many years as a housewife, looking after elderly parents, retired to Heysham.

Mrs Hudson has enjoyed embroidery and walking and has rich memories of her travels across Britain. She has been a keen gardener and is a dedicated follower of Yorkshire Cricket.

She is still an active member of the Gallowbarrow community, and has three granddaughters, Nina, Janet and Lauren.
