TRAIN services along the West Coast Mainline were delayed this morning following the derailment of a freight train north of Penrith yesterday in a head-on collision.
Network Rail said that the trains, which had delivered equipment and materials for track maintenance work, collided at low speed at 1.30pm on Sunday.
The driver of one of the trains sustained minor injuries, said a Network Rail spokesman.
Both trains have been rerailed and removed from the site between Carlisle and Penrith.
Some services today on the main route through Oxenholme to Carlisle have been cancelled as a result of the accident.
Buses are replacing trains between Carlisle and Penrith until 2pm today, said National Rail.
A spokesman for Network Rail: "The Rail Accident Investigation Branch is investigating and we will do all we can to fully assist. We apologise to passengers for the disruption caused."
Firs TransPennine and Virgin Train services have been affected between London Euston and Glasgow Central/Edinburgh.
