A 22-year-old dental nurse will be putting a smile on the face of orphans when she jets out to Morocco.

Becky Whitwell, from Kendal, will be helping to run portable surgeries, visiting schools, children’s homes and orphanages.

She will be part of a team providing oral health advice, assisting dentists and providing them with necessities such as toothbrushes and toothpaste.

She expects to see around 60 people a day.

Becky works at the Sandes Avenue Dental Practice and is a former Queen Katherine School pupil.

She said: “I've been a dental nurse for five years and since I qualified have been looking to use my skills to participate in a worthwhile cause such as this to help those less fortunate.”

She chose the volunteering trip with a charity called Dentaid and will fly to Casablanca and then travel on to El Jadida, a port city.

Becky explained: “We'll be working with Operation Smile Morocco for a few days then spend the rest if the trip visiting more rural areas to conduct dental outreach in schools, children’s homes and orphanages.

“In order to do this I must raise £1,300 which will go towards the equipment needed to run portable surgeries, and oral health necessities such as toothbrushes and toothpaste for everyone we see. Just £3 allows us to take a tooth out and we expect to see around 60 people a day per dentist.”
