A MAN has been taken to hospital by air ambulance today after becoming unwell at the wheel of his car.

The driver, aged between 61 and 70, is believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest which led to his car turning over.

The incident happened at around 12.40pm today on Boroughgate. One fire engine from Appleby and one from Penrith attended the scene.

The Great North Air Ambulance, The Pride Of Cumbria based at Langwaithby near Penrith, was called to assist.

GNAA said the aircrew paramedics worked with a doctor and off duty aircrew doctor alongside paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service.

The patient was stabilised and anesthetised before being flown to hospital in Carlisle.

Officials described his condition as 'critical and life-threatening'.
