TWO busy mums who met on the school run have created a new book aimed at making youngsters fall in the love with the Lake District.

Claire Jane Mansfield, 35, from Kendal, and Amy Onyango, 33, of New Hutton, have combined to create the book called Felltarn Friends - Lake District Adventures.

It introduces a number of new creature characters including Robyn Squirrel, Alice Rabbit, Henry Dog, and Hatty Sheep.

The 96-page book is packed with puzzles, games, facts and fun places to visit with the aim of helping little ones learn more about the Lakes.

It even includes the importance of following the Countryside Code and introduces organisations like mountain rescue to young minds.

Claire, who was raised and educated in South Africa, designed, wrote and illustrated the book.

Amy Onyango, of New Hutton, helped with research.

The pair met at Old Hutton Primary School and it was while out walking together they decided to produce a publication inspired by the Lakes.

Claire had previously thought about a colouring book and Amy, being a book lover, had wanted to write children’s stories.

After a few weeks of brain storming, the idea for Felltarn Friends came together.

Last summer, Felltarn Limited was registered and the "Felltarn" name trademarked.

Child-friendly local attractions, facts and crafts were researched as Claire designed each page, and the book was published in December 2013 by Tyson Media of Chester.

Claire said: “The Initial feedback from local retailers and the leisure industry has been fantastic as people realise the potential for the Felltarn Friends to appeal to children and enhance their experience in the Lake District.

“Support for the book has come from, to name a few: Low Sizergh Barn, Plumgarths Farm Shop, Waterstones, and Low Wood Bay Resort who want to make the book available to all the children that stay in their hotel.”

Felltarn Friends: Lake District Adventures is officially launched on February 1.

Priced at £8.99 it features puzzles, games, facts and fun places to visit as well helping learn all about the Lakes, mountains, buildings and people.

Hi Lakes_Lover,

Thanks for your comment, we're currently working on some new Felltarn Friends products such as colour-me-in postcards and a set of storybooks. We're also hoping to publish activity books for other areas, we just need to find some time to do all the research!

You can follow us on Twitter and Pinterest, and like us on Facebook. We are busy working on the website too but the holding page has some info: www.felltarn.co.uk.

I hope that info helps?
