MOTORISTS have been warned to avoid the A591 Staveley bypass after a road traffic collision involving two vehicles.

Kendal police tweeted about the incident that has blocked the road in both directions.

There are diversions via Staveley in place and they advised the public to avoid the area if possible.

A passing motorist told The Westmorland Gazette that she had seen six emergency vehicles at the scene and that the roof of one of the cars appeared to have been removed.

A Cumbria fire spokesperson said: "At 4.55pm, firefighters were called to a collision on the A591 in Staveley, Kendal.

"When they arrived crews found that the incident involved two cars. Crews used special cutting equipment to free a casualty who was trapped.

"They were then passed to the care of the ambulance service."
