Two M6 motorway resurfacing projects through Cumbria and North Lancashire to begin next month

A three mile northbound section around Burton-in-Kendal is to benefit from resurfacing in a £590,000 Highways Agency project starting on Tuesday (4 February).

The work is taking place around Burton Services between junctions 35 and 36 of the motorway and should be completed by Tuesday February 18.

Although lanes will need to be closed overnight from time-to-time, the carriageway will remain open at all times and the majority of the work is being done overnight to minimise inconvenience to motorway users. The services will also remain open at all times. A 50mph speed limit will be in place past roadworks, Highways Agency project sponsor Peter Gee said: “This project will provide safer, smoother journeys for drivers travelling along the M6 in this part of north Lancashire and south Cumbria.

“We will be doing our best to minimise delays to drivers’ journeys and will be doing a lot of the work overnight when the motorway is quieter. We ask drivers to respect the speed limit which will be in place for safety reasons.”

And a £600,000 Highways Agency project to resurface sections of the M6 around junction 34 at Lancaster will begin on Monday February 10.

Road markings and road studs will also be renewed. Both the northbound and southbound carriageways will benefit from the work which will be taking place between 8pm and 6am each night.

The main carriageway of the motorway will remain open at all times - sometimes with drivers directed to use the hard shoulder as a running lane. However, the northbound exit slip road and the southbound entry slip road will need to close overnight on a weekend each – on Saturday and Sunday 15 and 16 February and 22 and 23 February respectively.

A 50mph speed limit will be in place through the roadworks for the safety of motorway users and road workers.

Highways Agency project sponsor Peter Gee said: "This is routine work to tackle wear and tear along the motorway carriageway. We have timed the work to ensure it takes place at the quietest time of the day when traffic volumes are lowest.

"Due to the location of the work, overnight weekend closures of two of the slip roads will need to take place and drivers normally joining or leaving the motorway at junction 34 using these slip roads should leave a little bit of extra time to take alternative routes which will be clearly-signed."
