ONE of the most popular festivals in the South Lakeland calendar is set to light up the streets of Ulverston again – despite fears it might not go ahead.

The Lantern Festival draws hundreds of people to the town each year to watch a spectacular procession of paper lanterns paraded through the streets.

At the annual meeting of the Lantern Festival at the Coronation Hall last week, the 2014 event was given a green light. But there were concerns that the committee would not get the support needed from volunteers to run the event. Chris Nelson, speaking on behalf of Ulverston Busi-ness Alliance, said: “We have set a date for the festival this year. We are still throwing ideas around for a theme – but the event will definitely go ahead on September 13.

“What we need now is support from local people to get things moving.

“We need about 50 volunteers to help with organising the event and we need businesses to offer support, too.”

Peter Adams was elected as the new chairman of the committee of 20. A meeting next month will decide on what the theme for 2014’s parade will be. To get involved, call Peter Adams on 07759-017911 or Mr Nelson on 01229-861927.
