A LAKE District valley is going beyond its picture postcard image as residents and businesses gear up for a futuristic development plan.

More than 120 inhabitants, farmers, parish councillors and commercial operators in Ullswater have already taken part in a series of public meetings.

And the call has gone out to find out more in two gatherings next week.

The Lake District National Park’s valley planning initiative wants the community to help shape its own future.

Park management ranger Rec Cathey said it was important to identify what the people who lived, worked and visited Ullswater wanted.

She added: “We’ve been delighted by the response so far which has led to the formation of a number of groups covering the economy, environment and communities.

“We are looking at a wide-range of issues, including promoting the valley, diversifying industry, extending support for business, transport systems, environment protection and opportunities for young people.

“We’ve achieved a lot so far; youth activities, a heritage and oral history project and investigations into Ullswater loyalty cards for locals and visitors.”

February 11 sees an informal drop-in at Glenridding tourist information centre from 1-4.30 pm, where plans will be displayed and key national park staff on hand.

A formal evening session at Watermillock village hall will run from 6.15-8 pm, with a free buffet, presentation and questions and answers.
