A SERIES of seminars about health services in the area has begun with a successful session on ‘creaky hips and squeaky knees’.

Sixty members of the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust (UHMBT) attended the first seminars at Westmorland General Hospital and Furness General Hospital, held by consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Matt Freudmann.

“It really was a pleasure to be asked to conduct the ‘creaky hips and squeaky knees’ seminars,” said Mr Freudmann.

“Osteoarthritis is a very common condition and thousands of people undergo hip and knee replacements every year in the UK.

"Our trust alone performs over 1,000 joint replacements annually and it was great to have the opportunity to explain to local people exactly what these operations involve and just how good our results are compared with the rest of the country.”

More will now take place over the coming weeks, with subjects including dementia, breast services and hospital food to be tackled.

The next seminar, entitled ‘cancer: myths and reality’, will take place on February 11 at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

Places will be booked on a first come, first served basis and members should register online at www.uhmb.nhs.uk or telephone the membership office on 01539-716 642.

Non-members can join the trust beforehand by visiting www.uhmb.nhs.uk/trust/how-to-become-a-member

Chair of the trust, John Cowdall, said he would welcome suggestions for future seminar topics.
