A MEMORIAL has been unveiled to a former county councillor on the spot where his ashes were scattered two years ago.

John Phillips, who lived in Holme but attended church in Yealand Conyers, has been honoured by his widow Marlene and daughter Anne Morris, with a stone tablet in the grounds of his beloved St John’s Parish Church.

“It seems to have brought everything together,” said Anne, who grew up with her parents in Preston Patrick. “It marks the spot where we scattered his ashes and it also says a lot about his life because he loved the fells and you can see Ingleborough and the Lake District peaks from the churchyard on a clear day.”

Mr Phillips, who fought hard to get good community transport in the area, served the Crooklands ward on Cumbria County Council from 1993 to 1997.

In his younger years he worked in the electric industry, before working as a planning engineer at the Castle Green Hotel from 1962 until he retired in 1986.

He passed away in December 2011, at the age of 83, after losing a battle against cancer.
