A PENSIONER has been banned from driving for knocking down a pedestrian in his BMW - on a zebra crossing.

Kevin Langrish, of Rydal Road, Kendal, was disqualified from driving for six months when he appeared at South Lakeland Magistrates’ Court.

The woman pedestrian had visited B&Q and was walking to Asda on a pedestrian crossing when she was hit by the 73-year-old’s car on October 22, the court was told.

Lisa Hine, prosecuting, said her face ended up against the screen of his car and when she came too she was suffering from pain in her shoulder, a cut around her eye and noticed her shoes were yards away.

An ambulance took her to hospital, where it was found she had a dislocated shoulder and a fractured pelvis, added Ms Hine.

She said the victim, who still has physiotherapy for her shoulder injury, was in hospital for four weeks and had carers until December.

Ms Hine said Langrish had never had to stop on that crossing, and would not class it as an official crossing due to where it is.

“I’m very sorry for the injuries it caused to her,” Langrish told the court. “I wish her a speedy recovery.”

He added he would find it difficult without a licence as he is disabled, as is his wife, who he has looked after for 30 years.

Chairman of the Bench Stephen Baker said: “It’s clear from the facts of the case that your driving was dangerous, resulting in significant injuries to a pedestrian.”

Langrish will have to take and pay for a retest at the end of his six month driving ban.

He was also ordered to pay £130 compensation, £85 court costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
