A WOULD-BE bridegroom and a Lake District castle were both left beaming thanks to an unusual romantic marriage proposal.

Mat Burrow sprung a moving surprise on his girlfriend Scarlett Jepson when he arranged for his proposal to be beamed onto the historic wall of Muncaster Castle, near Ravenglass.

Mat, from Accrington, came up with the idea after searching for the most romantic and memorable way to pop the question to Scarlett, 22.

The 27-year-old finally approached Peter Frost-Pennington from Muncaster Castle who was happy to help out with the plan.

The couple both love the Lake District, so it was no problem for Mat to arrange a special trip to Muncaster for his proposal.

When the couple went for a romantic evening stroll around the gardens a stunned Scarlett watched as the walls of the castle lit up with hearts and roses, and a slide show of the couple’s lives, followed by ‘Scarlett will you marry me? Love Mat.’

Scarlett said:  “It was the best surprise ever. I was totally overwhelmed with the whole light show. I was speechless. Then when Mat's question beamed all over the castle walls I turned to find him on one knee with the ring, I immediately shouted ‘yes of course’. I loved it, it was the perfect proposal.”

Matm who works at Pendle Vale College in Nelson, and Scarlett, a sales advisor for a coach company, are expecting a baby daughter, and they are now saving up for their wedding.

Mat said: “Muncaster was the ideal place for the proposal, mixing the picturesque backdrop of the castle with a fantastic surprise light show. The castle and the surroundings were incredible and the romantic setting created by Peter made it perfect.”
