KENDAL Sea Cadets were presented with an annual award honouring those who have made a significant contribution to Kendal over the year.

The unit was presented with the Wainwright Award 2013 by town mayor Sylvia Emmott on Monday night.

Coun Emmott said the honour was ‘truly deserved’ as she handed the award to Commanding Officer Sub Lieutenant Neil Allison during a short ceremony at Kendal Town Hall.

The Kendal unit of the nautical charity was nominated for the award by the Royal British Legion (RBL), who praised their ‘invaluable contribution’ to the Poppy Appeal and participation in local events.

Una Bell, RBL’s Cumberland and Westmorland County Secretary said: “Even in these recessionary times the Kendal and District Poppy Appeal has seen an increase on previous years and without the support and commitment of Kendal Sea Cadets this would not have happened.

“Their band also participates in the Remembrance Parades in both Kendal and Windermere.

“These are key events in the Royal British Legion year and we are indebted to Kendal Sea Cadets for their continued support.”

The award is the latest in a series of recent successes for the unit, after being presented with RBL’s Trophy for Youth Endeavour for Cumberland and Westmorland.

They were also selected from 400 units for the Cleverly Award for Junior Sea Cadet Section in the UK, and won the Gravestock Award for Best Junior Sea Cadet Section in the North West.

Other Kendal events they take part in are the annual Mayor’s Parade and Kendal Torchlight.

Thanking Kendal Town Council for the award, Sub Lieutenant Allison said: “It’s been an amazing year for Kendal Sea Cadets and I think our success is helping to get the town on the map.”

The Kendal Sea Cadets were established in the early 1940s.

The independent charity  meets on Mondays and Thursdays at its Queen Katherine Street headquarters and currently has around 30 cadets aged between 10 and 18.
