WENSLEYDALE cheese, Swaledale sheep and writer Alan Bennett have all been named on a list of Yorkshire’s best-loved icons.

Mr Bennett, who has a home in Clapham, was seventh on the 75-strong list while the cheese, made at Hawes, was eighth and the sheep 54th.

The Three Peaks, which includes Ingleborough, appeared in 44th place and Yorkshire pudding topped the list.

The poll of 11,000 people was carried out by Dalesman magazine to mark its 75th anniversary and several of the county’s famous people spoke about their own choices.

Actor Sir Patrick Stewart said: “Nowhere is more iconic for me than the Three Peaks in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.”

And Alan Titchmarsh described Alan Bennett as ‘a man of great insight, great warmth and enormous generosity of spirit’.
