COMMUNITY volunteers filled a large skip with washed-up rubbish during a beach spring clean at Askam-in-Furness.
About 80 adults and children, aged from five to 85, turned out, including volunteers from the 3rd Duddon, Askam and Ireleth Scout Group, Ireleth St Peter’s School, Askam and Ireleth WI, and Dunnerholme Golf Club.
Ian Standing, chairman and station officer for Duddon Inshore Rescue Team, said: “It was very successful and we’re talking about doing it again.
“We had a local chap as well, who used a trailer and tractor to pick up the piles of litter, which was mainly plastic. After, the adults had coffee and tea at our base, and there was chocolate and pop for the kids.” He said the estuary was a magnet for litter, particularly as a result of recent high tides.
