PATIENTS at a South Cumbrian hospital are singing, clapping and tapping in the wards thanks to a dedicated harp player.

Musician Mary Dunsford, who has performed in top concert venues across the country, including the Royal Albert Hall, has become a big hit at Furness General Hospital.

Mary’s latest project is a ‘Harp in Healthcare’ initiative which aims to provide a window to the outside world through short cultural exchanges both by patients’ bedsides and in communal areas.

Mary undertook specialist training in order to be able to deliver her music effectively in the hospital setting – and patients have reacted positively to the project.

Barry Rigg, community engagement manager at the hospital, said: “It is relaxing and a special touch for our patients, staff and service users. We are grateful to Mary for sharing her skills and talent within our hospital.”
