ROAD closures of New Market Street and Market Place on Ulverston Market Days come into effect tomorrow (Thursday).

From that date no vehicles will be allowed to pass along these roads between 8am and 5pm on Thursdays and Saturdays.

The only two exceptions are market trader’s vehicles whilst they are setting up and leaving and emergency service vehicles which need access.

Police have said Brogden Street traffic is to be permanently reversed and access will be from Cross Street.

Vehicles will be re-directed from the town centre or down Brogden Street on Market days.

Sergeant Rupert Johnston, of the Ulverston and Lakes Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Police will be on hand to enforce, educate and inform motorists.

"I am aware that for some people this will mean a change to how they get to or from their premises on these days; however with Market and New Market Street completely free of moving traffic it will be a safer environment for both locals and visitors to enjoy the town.”

Ulverston Town Major Judy Pickthall said: “The town council fully supports this initiative and has worked closely with CCC and SLDC for some time on this matter.

"We look forward to a safer environment and welcoming new market traders to the town”

David Phillips the manager of the Coronation Hall and the  Market said: “When the Traffic Order is in place, New Market Street will result in a safer environment for market traders and customers.

"Extra space will be available for new stalls and with rents from only £1.19 per foot  - this is an excellent way of starting out in business at a very low cost.

"More stalls and more space will help generate additional footfall for the town centre”
