A DRIVER had a lucky escape last night after his car ended up in Windermere when he took ill behind the wheel.
The 55-year-old man was at Ferry Nab, Bowness.
He managed to flee his Audi which rolled into the lake. Cumbria Police said they received the call at around 8.30pm.
Lake Wardens were alerted as was the coastguard and the man, from Preston, was taken to hospital.
On a social media site today, Windermere Lake Wardens said: "Just in case anyone wondered about the activity at Ferry Nab last night, we were called out by the coastguard after a car inadvertently drove into the lake down the ferry ramp.
"Thankfully the single occupant got out of the vehicle before it sank, he was taken to hospital to have his injuries assessed and we recovered the vehicle using our tractor."
