THERE were nearly 24,000 crimes committed in Cumbria during the last financial year.

Tonight's meeting of Ulverston Town Council was told that there were 23,988 crimes reported which represented a 988 increase from the same period between April 2012 and April 2013.

Sgt Rupert Johnson, of Ulverston Police, told councillors that in Ulverston the figure had risen from 1,432 to 1,435.

He also said that in the last 30 days in the town there had been 25 crimes including eight shoplifters - four of whom had been caught - and seven assaults, of all which had been detected.
