THIRTY-four students got a taste of what life is like for BAE Systems employees yesterday.

Around three hundred youngsters accompanied their parents to work at various BAE Systems sites across the UK for the annual ‘Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day’.

At the submarines site in Barrow-in-Furness, students shadowed their parents as they went about their day-to-day work, getting to observe first-hand just what it is that their parents do as well as being treated to a special behind-the-scenes tour.

For many of the young people who took part in the day, this was the first time that they had visited a workplace.

The initiative, aimed primarily at 14 to 16 year olds, has now been hosted for eleven years at BAE Systems Maritime-Submarines.

The day ultimately aims to inform those involved about the exciting possibilities of careers in science, technology, engineering and maths.

Richard Hamer, Education Director & Head of Early Career Programmes, BAE Systems, said: “The ‘Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day’ is an important opportunity for us to interact with students from the local area and demonstrate the exciting career opportunities that are made possible by pursuing studies in science, technology, engineering and maths.

"The initiative is designed to inspire young people to consider the possibility of a career in the sector and helps to ensure that there is a strong presence of future talent.

“The day offers children more of an understanding of what we do here at Maritime-Submarines as well as a unique insight into the jobs of their parents. We hope that this opportunity will encourage them to think about their own future careers and maybe consider following in the footsteps of their parents.”
