THE Bassenthwaite ospreys have returned for a 14th year and hopes for a successful summer of breeding are high as one bird has already produced three eggs.

The bird, known as KL, raised two chicks at the site last year and her third egg this mating season was discovered on Tuesday morning.

Ospreys first nested at Bassenthwaite in 2001, becoming the first of their kind to breed in the Lake District for 150 years.

A high definition camera in the nest is sending live pictures to the Whinlatter Visitor Centre.

Visitors can also see the birds’ nest at the Osprey Viewpoint at Dodd Wood, near Keswick.
