MERCEDES-Benz of South Lakes gave guests at its Princes Street showroom an exclusive taste of the forthcoming Ulverston International Music Festival.

With performances by two highly acclaimed local musicians, the Ulverston retailer hosted its own mini concert on Friday (May 2).

Anthony Hewitt, the festival’s Artistic Director, said: “I’ve played everywhere from town squares to cliff tops but this is the first time that I’ve ever performed in a car showroom!

“It’s a really unique location and the beautiful room with its high ceiling made the most of the acoustics.”

Award-winning saxophonist Jess Gillam and internationally-renowned pianist Anthony Hewitt took centre stage at the evening which gave a sneak preview of what is to come from June 6 to 15.

Gary Thompson, General Manager of Mercedes-Benz of South Lakes, said: “The music was amazing and we were very pleased to lend our support to an event that is a major part of our community and which has become recognised as one of the UK’s best classical and jazz festivals.”

Jess, 15, from Ulverston, is considered to be one of the most accomplished up-and-coming saxophonists, having won a place at the esteemed Royal Northern College of Music Juniors and reaching the final of the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2014 Woodwind Category.

Her captivating set was complemented by a screening of her appearance on the final of the BBC competition.

She was accompanied on piano by John Gibbons who will conduct at the festival’s choral concern in Ulverston Parish Church on June 14th.

Mr Gibbons also accompanied 11-year-old Patsy Gillam who is an accomplished clarinet player.

Mr Hewitt also ensured that piano keys rather than car keys were foremost in the thoughts of guests.

Born and raised in Ulverston, Mr Hewitt has had a successful musical career which has included playing with the National Symphony Orchestra in the USA and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the UK.

He gave guests a preview of the delights in store in the line-up at the 2014 Ulverston International Music Festival.
