LOWICK Young Farmers Club (YFC) won the Southern District Field Day for the first time in its history on Saturday.

The club, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, hosted the event at Hawkswell Farm, Ulverston.

Hailed by YFC Chief Officer Jan Davinson as ‘a huge success’, the Field Day saw 1,000 visitors gather in glorious sunshine to watch young farmers take part in more than 100 competitions.

In the industrial section there was a ‘wonderful’ display of baking and crafts with Pennine YFC winning the Hay Time Picnic, Sam Butterfield from Broughton winning the home-made marmalade, Alice Longmire, Lowick, the stripy jelly and Robyn Postlethwaite, Furness, the home brew.

In the field competitions Billy Whittaker from Cartmel won the scrap heap challenge with his self-propelled vehicle. Phil Edmondson, Lowick, won the senior tractor handling and Robert Hetherington, Eden Valley, the pedal tractor handling.

The tug of war was, as always, fiercely fought with Grayrigg winning the junior competition, Broughton the female and Kent Estuary the male.
