ONE of the latest innovations in watersports is bringing a splash of excitement to the shores of Windermere.

The introduction of the exhilarating experience of ‘flyboarding’ is set to be a real talking point among visitors to the lake this summer.

Low Wood Bay Watersports Centre and Marina is hitting new heights with the delivery of the new flyboard.

It is a high tech water jetpack attached to a personal water craft which allows riders to fly up to 15 metres in the air, hover skillfully or dive headlong through the water.

Riders balance themselves on a board which is connected by a long hose to the watercraft, which supplies thenecessary propulsion as water is forced under pressure into a pair of boots with jet nozzles underneath, generating all the thrust they need to take flight.

“You only need to be a few inches out of the water to feel that you’re really flying,” explains Dave Carroll, one of the centre’s trained flyboard instructors.

“And when you’re ten metres into the air you get a fantastic adrenaline rush.

“Most people take to the sport like ducks to water.

“And with good coaching from a qualified instructor they can get the feel for it pretty quickly and launch themselves into the air at will.”

The flyboard was invented in 2011 by a French watercraft rider, Franky Zapata He built several prototypes before perfecting the design which allows the device to climb out of the water and remain stable in the air while power is fed from a lower noise four-stroke engine.

Run by Lakes Flyboarding, the addition of this new activity complements the wide range of water-based pursuits offered at Low Wood Bay Watersports Centre and Marina.
