THE trust that runs Furness General Hospital has agreed a six-figure settlement following the death of a mother and baby on the site’s maternity unit.

The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust (UHMBT) has agreed the to pay Ulverston man, Carl Hendrickson, an undisclosed amount, almost three years after he began proceedings following the death of wife, Nittaya, and newborn son, Chester in 2008.

The case was due to be heard in the High Court next month, but a spokeswoman for Burnett’s solicitors, which dealt with the claim, revealed ‘a six figure settlement’ has been agreed.

Speaking after the settlement, Mr Hendrickson, 47, said: “It is an immense relief to me and my family that this case has finally been resolved.

“I am grateful to Sally Hatfield QC, Vicki Jagger and everyone at Burnetts for their hard work and persistence, but disappointed it has taken the trust so long to end this.”

Mr Hendrickson began the proceedings in October 2011.

He now plans to travel to Thailand with his son, Conrad, so that proper funerals can be held for Nittaya and Chester and they can be buried with Nittaya’s ancestors.
