AN ULVERSTON student with a passion for vintage clothes and red lipstick is in the running for a coveted style award.

Aspiring journalist Lydia Smyth, 19, only started her fashion and beauty blog last August – but has been nominated for Company magazine’s Style Blogger Awards 2014.

Lydia will find out whether she has won the Best Personal Style Newcomer category at an awards party at The Oval, London, in two weeks time.

In the meantime, she has secured an internship on the features desk of Company – her favourite magazine – this summer.

“I’m so excited,” said the former Ulverston Victoria High School pupil. “I can’t even really put it into words. It hasn’t really sunk in yet.

“I’ve done work experience at The Westmorland Gazette and an internship at London Fashion Week – to go from that to this, is surreal.”

Keen photographer Lydia, who studies English literature at Warwick University, has been amazed by the success of her blog, where she writes about her outfit choices and her love of vintage clothes with ‘a story to tell’.

“I’ve been quite overwhelmed by how much it’s taken off. I got 1,000 followers within about six weeks, which is amazing.”

Lydia, who describes her own look as boho/rock and roll, added: “I’ve always wanted to be a writer. It sounds really cliched but it’s something that’s always been with me. I just love the opportunity to express myself, which is why I have a blog. The fashion world is really exciting.”
