MORE than 13,000 people are expected to flock to this weekend’s annual Country Fest.

The festival at the County Showground, Crooklands, got off to a flying start today (May 31) and will continue to run until Sunday (June 1).

Christine Knipe, Chief Executive, said: “We had 13,000 people last year and we’re hoping to match that, if not more, this year.

“There’s a bigger lay out, more exhibitors and additions of a cross country trail and a baking competition tomorrow.”

Now in its 6th year, there were also more historic cars and classic motor bikes, sheep shearing and plenty to do for the kids with ‘have a go’ kite flying.

On offer for food-lovers was an array of deliciously tempting tasters provided by local producers in their pop-up stalls.

Joanne Hunter, owner of the region’s famous Grasmere Gingerbread, said: “It’s our first time here as we usually go to Holker Garden Festival.

“We’ve heard such good things about the show and it’s a real family friendly event with a great atmosphere.”

Judith Wren, of Kin Toffee Vodka at Newby Bridge, said: “We’ve been working till very late to get the vodka bottled and there’s been lots of interested people from all over.

“Even if people don’t buy it, it’s just spreading the word.”

Also on the cards was the breaking of the Guinness World Record for the largest teddy bear in the form of a kite, built by Crooklands-based Smile Factor 10.

Visitors were also treated to agricultural displays, food demonstrations and live music.
