M6 southbound at Penrith to close overnight for resurfacing work

The southbound exit slip road is being closed for resurfacing following an incident on bank holiday Monday (May 26) which resulted in a lorry spilling diesel fuel over the slip road, damaging the surfacing.   

To allow the resurfacing to be done safely the southbound exit slip road will be closed overnight between 8pm and 6am tonight (Tuesday 3 June), tomorrow night (Wednesday 4 June) and on Thursday night (5 June).

Access to the northbound A592 - which is adjacent to the end of the southbound exit slip on the roundabout with the A66 at junction 40 - will also be closed tonight for one night only with drivers needing to take alternative routes to get to Penrith from the roundabout.

Drivers planning to leave the southbound M6 at junction 40 over the next three nights should seek alternative routes or follow the signed motorway diversion which entails travelling onto junction 39, using the junction roundabout to join the northbound M6 and leaving the motorway at junction 40 using the northbound exit slip road.

Drivers seeking to join the A592 into Penrith from the roundabout at junction 40 overnight tonight should instead travel west along the A66 to Rheged roundabout, join the eastbound A66  from there and then take the first left into Mile Lane – reaching Penrith and the A592 via  the B5288 Greystoke Road.

Drivers are advised to check traffic and travel conditions before setting out on journeys and to heed advice on electronic signs.
