ARTISTS from Cumbria and beyond gathered at Kendal’s Brewery Arts Centre for the Open Up North 2014 awards ceremony.
Manchester-based artist Iain Andrews landed first prize and £1,000 for his acrylic painting The Duke and Duchess of Torquemada with Windermere photographer Don Fitzpatrick picking up £500 in second place for his images of The Drawing Room at Brantwood.
Third prize and £200 was given to Hexham artist Karen Melvin, for her piece Devil’s Water and local artist Victoria Gray of Ulverston landed the Emerging Artist Prize for Birds and Butterflies of the Scottish Highlands.
More than 550 artworks by 384 artists from all corners of the north of England were submitted for the prestigious prize with entries across all art forms. The winners’ work will be displayed along with the other selected artworks at the Brewery, Abbot Hall Coffee House and Castle Dairy in Kendal until July 27.
Brewery chief executive Richard Foster said Open Up North was a highpoint of the Brewery’s visual arts calendar and forged links with artists from across the north of England, which in the past has lead to new commissions and exhibitions.
