A KENDAL church organist played 100 pieces of music in six hours during a sponsored organ marathon.

Peter Barker, has been the official organist for St George’s Church for around four years.

The 77-year-old decided to use the historic Grade 1 listed Wilkinson organ to raise funds for a new church car park and other maintenance work.

“It’s a superb organ and I feel we ought to show it off and use it for things,” said Mr Barker.

Saturday saw him playing from 10am to 4pm and netting a total of around £600 — roughly £100 per hour.

His repertoire on the day included everything from Bach and Handel to love songs and wedding music.

There was also a section devoted to music by William Smallwood — St George’s first organist, who gave the opening recital on the organ when it was installed in 1883.
