RESIDENTS in Kirkby Lonsdale are hoping to bring back the early-September crowds when they launch their first ever ‘Edwardian weekend’ this year.
The event – named The Summer Before – will be held over the first weekend of the month, replacing the annual Victorian Weekend which folded five years ago, and has been replaced by several events which have failed to capture residents’ imaginations.
“We hope it’ll be a success and we’re hopeful of starting a new theme for Kirkby Lonsdale for that weekend, which can be continued for several years,” said Allan Muirhead, chair of the town council.
“The Edwardian age lasted several years so there’s a lot to celebrate.”
The weekend will include a parade, old-fashioned sports day, exhibition and costume hire, among other things.

It was discussed at a packed public meeting, called by community manager Belinda Roos, who submitted a bid to the National Lottery for a grant to pay for the town’s war memorial to be refurbished and for ‘other activities’ associated with World War One.
The Edwardian period was the years 1901 to 1919, which included the war between 1914 and 1918.
Members of the town’s Methodist Church, brass band, Royal British Legion and Play Partnership have all agreed to support the weekend.
“Everyone was so positive with their ideas,” said Ms Roos.
“But we need everyone to co-operate and do their bit to make it a success.
“Edwardian clothes are relatively easy to replicate so perhaps we will have some dressing up.
“We’ve got to ensure there’s something for everyone.”
Those present at the meeting vowed to make the weekend ‘bright and cheerful’ Coun Muirhead said: “There will be events on the Friday night and they will continue all weekend.”
“This could be the start of something really great for Kirkby Lonsdale.”
