SOUTH Lakeland District Council will be flying the flag next week to support Armed Forces Day.
The council will be holding a ceremony to hoist a specially commissioned Armed Forces Day flag above Kendal’s town hall on Monday, to celebrate the essential role of the armed forces, both past and present.
Coun Clare Feeney-Johnson, on behalf of the Chair and Vice-Chair of SLDC, Coun Evelyn Westwood and Councillor Pru Jupe, and army Captain Steve Firth will raise the flag.
They will be joined by armed forces representatives Private Donal Clarke and Private Scott Farmer, Commanding Officer Dave Horsman of the Royal British Legion, Lieutenant Clive Sumter and Chief Petty Officer Andy Edgar of the Sea Cadets and a representative from the Army Cadets.
MORE TOP STORIES: Those attending will gather at the town hall entrance, where two Sea Cadet buglers will play ‘The Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’ while the flag is raised. The flag will fly above the town hall until after Armed Forces Day on Saturday, June 28.
Armed Forces Day raises public awareness of the contribution made to the country by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.
It also gives the nation an opportunity to show support for the men and women who make up the armed forces community, from currently serving troops to service families and veterans to cadets.
Vice-Chairman of SLDC, Coun Pru Jupe, said: “Regrettably I am unable to attend but thank Cllr Feeney-Johnson, who supports the Kendal Sea Cadets as a member of their management committee, for stepping in and all the attending organisations’ representatives for their support.
“It is an honour and I value the contribution of the armed forces in maintaining peace and order internationally. Indeed, my husband served as an RAF pilot for 20 years.
“This is a good opportunity for the council and South Lakeland community to express support and build partnerships with various local branches of the armed forces which are represented at this flag-raising event.
“This marks the start of a week of local and national events. I hope everyone can take part and continue to share common goals of living together in peace supported by the forces.”
