Animal lovers are in for a bumper Saturday at the South Lakes Zoo.

The Dalton-based animal park is hosting two events on the same day to raise awareness and money for endangered animals.

Organisers are hoping the first ever World Giraffe Day could inspire the younger generation to save the species from extinction.

A spokesperson for South Lakes Zoo said: "Giraffes are amazing animals but they're currently endangered and becoming extinct in West Africa. They used to be running around all over the place and now there's a group that numbers around 300."

Geared towards children, zoo staff have prepared several games ranging from 'giraffe bingo' to a pin the tail on the donkey-style game where kids have to guess where the giraffe will poo!

All funds will go to the Niger Association to Safeguard Giraffes.

At the same time, an event will be held for anybody who has adopted an animal at the zoo.

They will enter free of charge and get to meet their adoptive animal and the keepers who look after them.

Entry for non-adopters is £15 for adults and £9 for children.
