CONSERVATIONISTS who have helped to look after the Lake District’s iconic landscape have been hailed in a special ceremony marking 60 years of volunteering in the national park.
More than 70 people, aged from 16 to 86, congregated in Grasmere to mark the anniversary being celebrated across the summer.
The national park’s volunteer co-ordinator Tim Duckmanton said: “From the highest peaks to our stunning lakes, rivers and coastline, volunteers make a tremendous difference to the care of our world-renowned landscape.
“Their commitment and achievement is unbelievable. We deeply value the work and support they give to ourselves and other countryside organisations.
“Without them, we couldn’t achieve the same volume of work. These remarkable men and women are as special as the places they look after.”
The gathering included George Lindley, 85, of Settle, who was active in the volunteer service 55 years ago.
