RESIDENTS of the Yorkshire Dales have been looking back at cycling through the ages - in anticipation of the sport's most famous event jinking through its streets.

Yorkshire Dales Journeys is a fascinating new exhibition on show at the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes, showcasing old photos and memorabilia.

It has been timed to coincide with the staging of the Tour de France Grand Départ on July 5.

MORE TOP STORIES:

Many of the exhibits were sent in as a result of an appeal by artist Jan Bee Brown, who worked with Museum staff on a project called ‘Daisy, Daisy’, tracing the history and the impact of cycling in the Dales.

Jan has created a short film based on the items she received which can be seen at the exhibition.

It includes 'Daisy the tandem, a Penny Farthing on loan from the Richmondshire Museum, and an archive film called from 'Trike to Bike'; created by the Yorkshire Film Archive.

Fiona Rosher, museum manager, said: “We’ve had a fantastic response to our request for stories, with about a 100 people sending in photos and stories of cycling in the Yorkshire Dales. People have also been very generous in offering other material for the exhibition.

“We hope visitors coming for the Tour de France Grand Départ on July 5 will drop in over the weekend and soak up the nostalgia.

“They will also have a chance to read the stories and see the photos of early cycling in the area and hopefully, they will add their own snippets too.

"They can always tweet or Facebook their photos for us to include @Dalesmuseum as the exhibition will be here until September 30.”
