THIRTY young people from South Lakeland are off to Ullswater next week to start their National Citizen Service (NCS).

The group, aged between 16 and 17-year-olds, are the first local group of this year to start a three week long NCS journey with Inspira.

NCS has been designed to help young people develop the skills they need for life and work.

Monday's group will spend a residential week at Ullswater Outward Bound centre.

They will climb mountains, camp out over night and learn how to overcome challenges and team building experiences.

Backed by the Government, it means that the full three weeks summer adventure only costs £35.

“It really is a once in a lifetime opportunity for all 16-and-17 year olds in the South Lakes,” explained Brenda Reading, of Inspira.

“The outward bound element is just one part as they will be staying in Ambleside where they will experience independent living – shopping and cooking for themselves, and working with local businesses and organisations.”

NCS focuses on personal and social development which includes leadership, teamwork and communication skills – wrapped up in a fun adventure.

The teenagers will also find out about their local communities and identify ways in which they can contribute to their community such as raising money for local charities, said Inspira.

“There are a few places left on the programme,” says Brenda.

“So get in touch and we can tell you all about it.”

Other start dates are 7th July, 21st of July and 4th of August.

A survey of NCS participants last summer, revealed that 92 per cent of the young people felt they had the chance to develop skills which will be useful to them in the future – and 98.5% would recommend it to other young people.
