Lisa Hine, prosecuting, said Scrogham, who had drunk four cans of Stella Artois, kept asking where it was before picking up the ashtray and throwing it at his mother, hitting her in the eye and causing her cheek to swell.
The court heard that he continued to ask his mother, who suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cannot walk very far, where his phone was before going to his bedroom.
In mitigation, Suzie Kavanagh said the attack was a ‘reckless act’ and added that Scrogham had witnessed his friend get assaulted earlier in the day.
She added that Scrogham fully accepted he should not have thrown the ashtray and that he completely reacted in the wrong way.
He will be sentenced at South Lakeland Magistrates’ Court on July 16.
