THREE hundred runners raced through thigh-deep waters and strong head winds across the sands of Morecambe Bay for CancerCare.

The charity’s annual Cross Bay Challenge half marathon from Hest Bank to Flookburgh also saw 250 walkers complete a gentler, seven-mile trek from Jenny Brown’s Point at Silverdale to the race finish line.

The event raised £20,000, giving an important boost to CancerCare’s work supporting children and adults with cancer, their families and carers in South Lakeland and north Lancashire.

No stranger to the sands, 80-year-old Carnforth runner Peter Ellison picked up a special trophy to mark his record eighth Cross Bay Challenge.

Meanwhile, first man across the line was John Rocke, 26, of Aberdeen, in 1 hour 25 mins. "It was a pleasure to take part in, although very, very tough!” he said. “More importantly, it was great to be able to raise money for such a good cause. I can't wait to do it again next year!”

Lancaster’s Carolyne Baxter, 22, was the first woman to finish, in 1 hour 40 mins.

“It went brilliantly,” said CancerCare PR Lyndsey Murison. “There was quite a cool wind but people were obviously coming over the line red-faced, just relieved to get to the finish.”

Jane Staniford, the charity’s fundraising team leader, added: “We had a fantastic day for the event this year and everyone had a great time although conditions were very tough for our runners who battled against a strong head wind for most of the route – they should be very proud of themselves!

“It was also great to see so many families taking part in the walk this year. It was a record year for us!”

She added: “On behalf of CancerCare, I’d like to give a special thank you to Steven Manning and the Bay Fisherman’s Association guides for their support and expertise ensuring everyone crossed safely.”
