KENDAL’S food bank has received £7,000 from Cumbria County Council to help pay for kitchen equipment for those in need.

The King’s Food Bank, which has provided more than 26,000 meals since February 2012, can now provide microwaves, pans, kettles and cutlery thanks to the grant.

On average this year it has provided 1,500 meals each month compared to 1,000 last year.

“The food bank is making a real difference in our town; we are bringing a real hope and value to the people who find themselves in a crisis situation,” said manager Rachel Ellis.

“The simple, practical gift of food and support at the point of crisis changes lives.

“We may be sorry that there is a need for the food bank in Kendal but we are so glad that we are here and are able to help those who need us.”

Meanwhile, its fundraising dinner at the Castle Green Hotel raised more than £1,500 and a coffee morning, sponsored by Morrisons, raised £144.89.

Rachel added: “It's so important to ensure the sustainability of the food bank through such fundraising events because sadly, food poverty continues to be a reality in Kendal for so many families.”

The food bank is currently short of tinned vegetables; UHT milk; fruit juice/squash.
